New Beauty Editor Obsessions for July

There’s a lot happening for your hair this month—a salon-level hair mask, brand-new brushes, an all-time favorite blow-dryer that’s finally back in stock—but the beauty department is also reveling in the summeriest oil-meets-perfume ever, a French-vacation sunscreen, a gorgeous beetroot lip-and-cheek tint, and more.

  2. If summer were a scent, this oil/perfume/limb sheen would be peak July along the Amalfi Coast, citrusy and faintly floral and even a little salty like the sea. Fashion designers make scents all the time, of course, but this is the first-ever one where you sense the workings of a mind that knows its way around a body: The chic glass vial is a wide rollerball that’s pure heaven to smooth across your skin. It feels especially great against a bare leg peeking out from a skirt or along a collarbone accentuated by a wisp of a spaghetti strap; designer-turned-perfumer Behnaz Sarafpour (Gwyneth and Michelle Obama both love her work) has to have been thinking of these things when she created it. And the scent itself is absolutely addictive—subtle and soft enough that a person has to come close to detect it and so good that I incessantly reroll it over my wrists, neck, legs (it sinks right in for a gleam that’s super flattering and entirely unoily), and even, sometimes, directly under my nose.

  2. The famous makeup artist Dick Page once taught me the best (counterintuitive) tip: The most natural-looking makeup is done with bright color. An intense pigment allows you to use much, much less of it. Case in point: This new, sheer, watery, beautifully (and vividly) beetroot-tinted lip-and-cheek color leaves the most natural flush, perfect for summer skin. It’s perfect for winter skin, too, but I think of summer as the barest-face time, where it’s just skin, skin, skin and no makeup-y texture at all, save something (this) to brighten things up. I dot the tiniest bit on my lips, smooth with my finger, then dab the remaining color on the apples of my cheeks—chic, easy, and really flattering.

  2. This turmeric-infused gel foams into the world’s most refreshing way to sweep away dirt, sunscreen, makeup, and oil. Somehow it cleanses thoroughly yet, like everything Miranda Kerr makes, leaves your skin soft and dewy, utterly comforted and feeling decidedly more beautiful. (The secret is a combination of calming turmeric and nurturing, skin-barrier-protecting ingredients like aloe juice and sugar isomers.) The tall pump dispenser looks gorgeous on a bathroom counter, too.

  2. If you’ve ever wished your favorite superpowered face treatment were a mask, your moment has arrived. These reusable face and eye masks turn any face oil, serum, or cream into a mask: Smooth your most prized, most active treatment (so far, my ultimate combination is Vintner’s Daughter serum plus GOOPGENES eye cream) over your skin, then layer the sheet mask over the top. Sit back, perhaps in a bath, perhaps with an amazing book (I just finished Paradise and cannot recommend it more highly), while the mask seals in the active ingredients and moisture at once. Leave it on for as long as you’d like, then simply wash it off when you’re done. Brilliantly sustainable, and for once, you can have exactly—exactly—what you want.

  2. If you can’t turn off your brain, are bad at falling asleep, feel achy from cranking it out at a laptop all day, or have a baby that somehow simultaneously depletes and nourishes your spirit, what might really help is to dump two heaping scoops of this silky powder—a magical infusion of neroli, lily, thyme, moringa, and other gorgeous-for-skin oils and extracts—into a warm bath. Steeping in this herby milk bath all but stops time, leaves every inch of you petal-soft, and untethers even the most tightly wound worries.

  2. The flecks of shimmery gold suspended in the bottle look like gently floating fireflies, but what stops me in my tracks is how shimmery, summery, revived, and radiant my skin looks immediately after massaging on a few drops of this Japanese face oil. It’s swirled with a zillion nourishing, skin-perfecting oils (jojoba, camellia, macadamia) and extracts to leave skin firm and supple. The scent—a faint burst of sandalwood, lime, and rosemary that’s so gorgeous you want to dip your whole body in it—is like nothing else: somehow energizing in the morning and deeply mellowing at night when I smooth it on right before bed.

  2. We touched down in Paris early on a Friday morning, with just three days to eat all the fresh bread and salted butter, languorously sip a glass or three of Beaujolais every time we sat down for lunch, and amble through Le Marais until the sun set, spectacularly, at 10 p.m. Our brief, long summer weekend in Paris also meant squeezing my overconsidered French-girl outfits and great-skin potions into a teeny carry-on. I whittled things down to just the essentials: cleanser, face oil, night cream, and this gorgeously silky, utterly invisible, pore-blurring mineral sunscreen and primer in one from Saint Jane. It feels and looks like nothing on: The white streakiness mineral sunscreen used to leave behind is nowhere in sight. Yet the blend of zinc oxide and flower active ingredients, like soothing jasmine and hydrating desert rose, subtly evens skin tone (the formula has a touch of sheer tint) and deposits the prettiest sheen. I smooth it on after or sometimes in place of face oil—it’s plenty moisturizing to stand alone as your day cream—and step out into the sunny day (Parisian or otherwise) feeling like a French girl.

  2. I often light this jasmine-lavender-rose candle as I’m soaking in my bath (see above). I fix my eyes on the flicker and try—but not militantly—to think of nothing else. Staring at the flame is head clearing and puts me right in the moment, as does the billowing scent. After 20 or so hazy minutes, I get out, taking the candle with me; drift to my bedroom; and tilt the candle so that the blend of cocoa-seed butter and jojoba, rapeseed, and soybean oils pools in my palm. (The candle has a low melting point, so the resulting massage oil is always perfectly warm but never too hot.) I work the oil up my legs, kneading my tight calves and going in gentle circles around my abs—this part feels the most fantastic naked, either alone or with a spouse or friend. Five minutes later, my skin is gleaming and soft, and my mind is as free as a cloud.

Bonus: If you want to bring the sexy vibes.

The Neom Organics candle’s ceramic jar and this new sleek vibrator make a great-looking pair propped on your bedside table—and they’re a pretty epic combination.

  2. This high-tech, wicked-fast-drying blow-dryer is finally back in stock, and not a moment too soon: In the summer heat, my straight, fine hair can’t hold an inch of volume unless I use this dryer. It’s small and lightweight (my arms don’t get tired), and it’s got a nine-foot cord, so maneuvering it, even in my tiny Manhattan bathroom, is a cinch. Used with the right round brush (I love the Philip B. one, with its large barrel and soft grip that give me the best texture and lift), the dryer makes it easy to give yourself a salon-esque blowout that really lasts. (Paired with a little dry shampoo, mine is good for up to three days.) I especially love the cold-shot setting for extra shine and frizz control—key after all the sun-and-salt-water-soaking I put my hair through.

  2. I’m a die-hard fan of everything Westman Atelier makes, and this new, weightless setting powder is no exception. Made with vitamin C, probiotics, and quinoa-seed extract, it leaves the most beautiful sheer finish—it’s an oil-absorbing, pore-refining, makeup-smoothing invisible cloud of skin-perfecting magic. The Pink Bubble shade instantly brightens my fair skin. I sweep it over my T-zone (with Westman’s amazing powder brush) and it sets and softens my makeup. Better yet, the smooth, natural-looking finish lasts from my first 9 a.m. meeting in Bryant Park all the way through my 8 p.m. dinner reservation at legendary Italian hot spot Dante West Village.

  2. I used to favor lightweight lotions over thicker moisturizers for fear of clogging my pores, but this miracle calming cream has changed my mind: The high-performance ingredients—hydrating evening primrose oil, antioxidant vitamin B3, super soothing black cumin oil, and Bader’s signature ingredient complex called TFC8—make it a skin treatment and supermoisturizer in one. Even if you have sensitive skin like mine, the richly luscious texture melts right into skin for instant relief, feels so good, and keeps your pores clear. Plus, hours afterward, my skin still feels supple, elastic, smooth, and radiant.

  2. This is the kind of hair treatment you’d normally have to book an appointment for. I expose my hair to coloring chemicals (highlights), heat styling, sun, and chlorine, so I’m in a constant battle to keep it silky and hydrated. But this mask is a reset button for brittleness, dryness, and damage. I couldn’t believe how incredible my hair felt the first time I tried it: My hair soaked up all the moisturizing nutrients like hyaluronic acid, shea butter, and squalane, and the resulting glossy softness really lasted. I now use it once a week and it keeps delivering. It comes in a sleek, giant tub, and I love the whipped gel-mousse texture.

  2. On a Wednesday morning at the Union Square farmers’ market—trees draping over the tented stalls piled with summer squash and corn, the smell of fresh-picked cilantro in the air—I listened to Alison Cayne (she’s the founder of the amazing healthy sauce company Haven’s Kitchen) talk about the difference between the vitamins in an orange carrot versus those in a purple carrot. She went on to explain how fresh, real foods supply our bodies with the vitamins they need in the same way that organic skin care boosts our skin with vitamins. That afternoon, I discovered this oil from the brilliant new clean brand FāTH. Made with 29 botanicals, including arnica, cypress leaf, and prickly pear and pomegranate seed oils, the oil has a silky, skin-coddling texture that melts into my skin, leaving it bright and glowy and healthy-looking as can be. It smells—in a beautifully sophisticated, calming way—of flowers, orange peel, and jasmine, and like all of FāTH’s formulas, it’s created in small batches using the highest-quality ingredients. I mix a few drops into my moisturizer in the morning, and in an instant, my skin feels soft as ever (and looks even better).

  2. Ever since my mom stopped doing my hair in lower school—my signature look was two damply combed tight braids by my forehead with a sparkly flower clip at each end—I’ve taken a decidedly hands-off approach to my hair. I do minimal styling beyond the occasional silk-scrunchie-tied ponytail or bun, no coloring, and a weekly treatment mask to keep it moisturized. But this new, large-barreled brush is a great new addition. I lightly brush it over my super fine hair (most brushes tear through it), and the soft, natural boar bristles never pull or snag, leaving my hair silkier, smoother, and shinier than ever. Now I show up at goop’s New York office with my hair untangled and completely brushed through, looking, dare I say, styled.

  2. Achieving a perfect slicked-back bun is an art, not just because of the hair part (although getting that every-single-strand-glued-to-the-scalp look is nearly impossible) but because of how great your skin needs to look to pull it off. This serum is my best trick. It’s overflowing with powerful proteins and peptides that moisturize, tighten, and really, really brighten my skin. My face looks radiant afterward. I walk around with my slicked-back bun in total confidence—neck revealed, clear skin exposed and ever so tightened, and glowing celestially.
